Who Rescued Who?

Everyone who has had a pet knows how devastating it is when they are gone. Our friends, Pennie and Scott, along with their two teenagers went through losing a little best friend a few months ago. Cosmo was sixteen, and even though he lived a long, happy life, it was terribly difficult for the Dahman family to say goodbye.

It is hard to know when the right time is to get another pet. It is even harder to come to an agreement about the right time when there is more than one person involved in the decision making. The Dahman kiddos were split. Tyler wanted another dog. Makayla wasn’t ready. Pennie and Scott were also in different time frames.

With so many pounds and rescues in our area, we felt sure they wouldn’t have any trouble at all finding a puppy when they were ready to start looking.

One day while Pennie was working, Scott and Tyler visited the pound to check out a dog they had seen online at the Trumbull County Dog Pound . Things didn’t go as well as they hoped with that puppy, but another one caught Scott’s eye. Next thing Pennie knew, Scott was asking her opinion about “Louise”.

How could she say no?

The pound has a wonderful foster-to-adopt program that allows people to take animals home for a trial period before making a final decision.

Within a few hours, Louise had a new home, new toys, and a new family that adored her. Now it was time for a new name!

The family tossed around a few names, narrowed it down to two, and decided on Makayla’s choice, Lilly. A beautiful name for a beautiful pup!

While Tyler was probably the deciding factor in bringing Lilly home, the whole family is active in her life. She loves walks, car rides and playing outdoors.

When it was time for Lilly’s spay, Pennie and Scott were pleasantly surprised to find that an animal welfare group had donated several vouchers and her surgery would be free! Valley Save-A-Pet is a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers. They have helped take care of dogs and cats for over forty years.

We would like to encourage everyone to follow the example of the Dahman’s and visit the local pound or shelter when searching for a pet. When you rescue a shelter animal, they turn around and rescue you right back.

  • I love this story of your friends finding their new friend. She will pay them back a hundredfold in love!! I’ve been helping our local humane shelter with their adoption events and it’s so rewarding to us to see an animal rescued. We had an event today and adopted out 3 puppies and a two year old wonderful (but very strong and active) dog that had been in the shelter at least months. As we were closing up and he was loaded into the van to go back to the shelter, I said I prayer that he would find a home soon. A few minutes later, a mom and daughter came up and said they wanted him!! They had seen him earlier and were bringing their tiny 16 year old dog to meet him and ended up adopting him!! There is no love like the love from a rescued animal!

    • Thank you! I love that you prayed for that sweet dog. I believe God loved them first and deeply cares about them. You are doing a wonderful service!!
