Sunday Adventures: Fish, Eagles and Pizza

This morning we decided to go to on a Sunday adventure. We have been in the middle of a heat wave that has made it miserable to do much of anything outdoors, so we left early in order to beat the heat.

Our first stop was at the Pymatuning Spillway. The spillway is a magical mix of fish and geese and ducks and seagulls. Wildlife heaven. There is a boardwalk complete with snacks for humans and bread for feeding the fish.

When we say there are a lot of fish, we mean a lot! Thousands, or millions, of carp come to the surface to beg for bread while the geese and ducks watch for stray pieces that they can grab.

Seagulls circle above, keeping a close eye on the bread bags.

The spillway creates a trap for carp that get too close to the edge. Once they fall over the edge they can’t get back up. None of them seem to really care, since there is a steady stream of humans throwing pieces of bread to them.

When we finished feeding the fish, we went up the road to the Pymatuning Wildlife Learning Center. The Center is temporarily closed for construction and the refuge area was not quite as welcoming as it was a year or two ago. In fact, it was a little creepy so we didn’t stick around to look for Bald Eagles.

We were a little disappointed that we didn’t get to walk around the wildlife trails, but we choose safe over sorry any day.

Our third stop was for lunch at the Covered Bridge Pizza Parlor. This pizza joint in Andover, OH is well worth the drive. We love their sausage pizza, and the white pizza with garlic and peppers is a close second.

We had a delicious lunch in a super cool, real covered bridge. The service is as good as the pizza. It all adds up to being a great place!

Our entire adventure took only a few hours and we had a blast. It’s nice to go on short day trips here and there. It felt like a mini-vacation!
