Sports Pet Peeves: Things That Drive Us Crazy

(We still watch anyway)

Sports are fun. A fun mess. Opinions abound, and what drives us crazy might be someone else’s favorite things ever. The idea for this blog came during a baseball game when the pitcher didn’t tip his cap as the crowd was giving him a standing ovation while he exited the field. Let’s just say it would only take half a second for him to touch his hand to his cap, but this small token of appreciation would have a huge effect on the fans’ perception of their team’s pitcher. It’s annoying when the pitcher doesn’t acknowledge the fans. Period.

We’ve put together a list of our top sports pet peeves, or at least the ones we can think of right now.

  1. It takes 20-30 minutes to play the last two minutes of a basketball game. The end of a basketball game should be an exciting experience, but the thrill is lost due to all the timeouts, fouls, reviews. The game is stopped so many times, we just want it to be over already.
  2. Coach interviews during the game or at halftime. The coach never wants to give the interview. They have many other things on their minds and are only answering questions (which are often dumb) out of obligation. Coaches really don’t want to talk about their strategies while the action is taking place, so they offer very little valuable information. This leads to number three.
  3. Commentators who state the obvious. “He’s going to want to score here.” Hey thanks, Expert Commentator. We were wondering what the offensive strategy was on 3rd and goal.
  4. Instant Replays that take forever. With modern technology, almost unlimited angles and so many experts, why does it take so long to make a decision? If they can’t come to an agreement on what took place in a couple of minutes, the call on the field should stand. Let’s get on with the game!
  5. Games should start earlier for folks on the East Coast. Games that start after 8:30pm are just too late for a lot of people in the eastern time zone. We understand the West Coast fans have to get home from work, but at least by starting earlier both sets of fans would get to enjoy the ending (which is undeniably the most exciting part of the game, unless we are talking about basketball). Lots of kids and people who work the next day routinely miss the 4th quarter or the last couple of innings. That stinks.

This list promises to be ongoing. We would love to hear your sports pet peeves!
