There are several foods in Northeast Ohio that we enjoy, but our friends in other areas of the country have never heard of. Wedding soup, anyone? Pepperoni rolls? How about the cookie table at weddings? Pierogis are a staple in this area and we are lucky enough to live near a restaurant that features them!
We met Don’s sister and her husband, Jodi and Todd, for dinner at Lena’s Pierogi House recently. When we got there, it was like walking in to Don’s Mom’s kitchen on Christmas Eve. You either love the smell of Polish food, or you don’t. Thankfully, we do!
This tiny restaurant in a small town makes over 100 pierogis every 15 minutes! In addition to many different kinds of pierogis, the menu has other Polish and Hungarian options. The guys each ordered huge platters of food, one Polish and one Hungarian. The girls each opted for a plate of pierogis.
The only difference in the platters was the Polish platter had kielbasa and kraut, and the Hungarian platter had mashed red skin potatoes topped with shredded boneless chicken Paprikash sauce. Todd ordered kielbasa with his Hungarian platter, an excellent addition!
There were six pierogi daily specials to choose from and Lena’s serves plain potato and cheddar every day. No matter which kind you pick, they are smothered in butter.
The restaurant didn’t have air conditioning and was cooled only by a floor fan. The dining area was small and most of the business while we were there was takeout. However, this did not put a damper on our evening at all. We had a great time with Todd and Jodi, and we were thrilled when Shannara Harvey, illustrator of the Bernie the One-Eyed Puppy series and one of my best friends, came over to our table. What a coincidence – it was Shanna’s first time at Lena’s Pierogi House too! She and her son, Drake, just happened to try it the same evening that we went. Great minds…..
If we ever get out to see, you we’ll have to go to Lena’s pirogi house! I love them! My grandma was Slovak so we had lots of food like that at her house.
