Save The Bees!

Buzz the Bee is missing. The Honey Nut Cheerios famous mascot has gone missing in a grand effort to bring attention to the plight of the honeybees.

I have been on a one-man mission to #SaveTheBees for many years, preaching to everyone around me to please not swat a bee, and to always kindly help them find their way out of the house, pool, or other predicaments they find themselves in. One of my proudest moments as a mom was when I found out the Dairy Queen crew had shooed a bee out of the DQ drive-thru window instead of squishing it because my Jessica had taught them to save the bees!

The bee-saving business is serious stuff in the Kurjan household (beyond being the name of my Fantasy Football team)! Shortly after we moved into our home, Don swatted a bee that had made its way through the back door. I couldn’t believe that this wonderful, kind-hearted man would kill such a sweet little creature, and after explaining I could never stay married to someone who kills bees, he has turned into one of the best bee savers ever. It melts my heart when he opens the sliding door to let the little honeybees back out into the yard, or when he scoops them out of the pool when they get a little too wet while getting a drink.

There are bee savers, and then there are bee whisperers. My friend, Monica, who lives in sunny Florida is a bee whisperer if there ever was one. She is able to take a bee that is dead to the world, and with some tender, loving care and a few sweet words that speak to their hearts, they are soon flying away. She has brightened my day more than a few times with videos and pictures of the honeybees that she has brought back to life.

Honey Nut Cheerios knows that this world needs more bee savers to help the dwindling bee population. If nothing else will convince you to save the bees, the thought of a severely reduced food crop should do the trick. Most of our food supply comes from crops that are pollinated by the bees, so without our little buzzy friends, we will see a dramatic reduction in our good eats. That is just plain scary!

The bee-saving campaign by Honey Nut Cheerios is an educational program, but they are also putting their money where their mouth is. They gave away over one billion wildflower seeds, which was ten times their original goal. People are encouraged to plant flowers which will help support the honeybees, and hopefully build back the diminishing colonies.
